Key Learning Objectives

The Leadership Journey focuses on 10 essential skills that leaders need to successfully lead and manage their teams:

1. Accountability

To achieve and surpass their teams’ goals, managers and supervisors must hold themselves and their teams accountable. Effective leaders don’t sit back and wait; they take action and provide direction.

Through this training, leaders will learn how to be proactive in taking ownership, initiative, and responsibility—and will learn how to spur their team members to do the same.

Participants will learn:

  • Why preparation and planning are critical for accountability.
  • A six-step accountability model.
  • What to do when followers don’t perform to expectations.

2. Change Management

Change is challenging but often creates growth and opportunity. Through The Leadership Journey, participants will learn how to prepare themselves and their teams for change. They will develop skills for using change to propel their teams to new performance levels.

Participants will learn:

  • How to prepare themselves and their teams for change.
  • How to respond to change with positive thinking and actions.
  • How to manage the one change factor they can control.

3. Coaching and Mentoring

While completing The Leadership Journey, managers and supervisors will hold discussions and interact with other participants, developing the skills and techniques needed to effectively coach and mentor their team members.

Participants will learn:

  • How to overcome denial and defensiveness when coaching.
  • How to turn coaching moments into action-orientated results.
  • Five steps to overcome resistance.

4. Communication

Communication is fundamental to every aspect of leadership. In fact, it’s embedded in all of our core leadership skills.

In The Leadership Journey, participants have an opportunity to learn and practice effective communication skills, including verbal and written skills, listening skills, and interpersonal communication.

Participants will learn:

  • A simple five-step method for giving clear directions.
  • How to give constructive negative feedback in a way that boosts morale.
  • How to listen well and ask questions.

5. Conflict Resolution

Through The Leadership Journey, managers and supervisors learn practical skills to shift a potentially negative confrontation into a future-focused, problem-solving dialogue. They gain the confidence to proactively address issues to overcome resistance and create buy-in.

Participants will learn:

  • How to manage emotions during challenging conversations.
  • Eight steps to turn confrontations into receptive conversations.
  • How to rebuild difficult relationships.

6. Empowerment

Empowerment is about getting work done through others. As leaders move from individual contributor roles to management roles, they need to shift their focus to managing rather than doing.

Their focus needs to be on empowering the team to do the work, not doing the work themselves.

Participants will learn:

  • How to provide clear and concise directions.
  • How to confirm understanding with followers.
  • How to empower teams to do the work.

7. Motivation and Attitude Improvement

Motivating others to achieve common goals is fundamental to effective leadership. The Leadership Journey offers opportunities to practice and discuss techniques that drive positive employee actions, engagement, and productivity.

Participants will learn:

  • Three necessary elements to motivate any follower.
  • How to overcome obstacles they may unknowingly be creating.
  • Five techniques to get maximum discretionary effort from followers.

8. Professionalism

Through participation in The Leadership Journey, leaders understand the important role they have, why they need to serve as positive role models, and how to exhibit professionalism through their interactions with others.

Participants will learn:

  • How to develop productive habits that improve effectiveness.
  • How to be consistent in words and actions.
  • The “magic” that results from doing more than is expected.

9. Relationship Building

Participation in The Leadership Journey improves a leader’s ability to interact with others, resulting in stronger relationships with followers. In addition, participants learn how to break down silos, build teamwork, and foster camaraderie between departments, which will improve productivity.

Participants will learn:

  • How to be the type of leader people will listen to and follow.
  • Six characteristics most valued by followers.
  • How to earn the trust and respect of others.

10. Teamwork

Working together to achieve common goals is foundational to organizational excellence. The Leadership Journey helps managers and supervisors develop the skills they need to work effectively with and through others.

Participants will learn:

  • The six key characteristics in all high-performing teams.
  • How to leverage each team member’s unique skills.
  • How to overcome communication challenges.

How Does the Program Work?

This leadership development program is delivered in short learning bursts rather than a one-time training event. Bite-sized courses are spaced out over time.

Built around adult learning principles, The Leadership Journey uses five simple but extremely powerful steps:

A five-step burst learning model - Learn, Internalize, Apply, Follow-up, Repeat

Step 1 – Learn

Leaders learn practical how-to skills from a short course. Each skill is explained step by step making it easy to understand.

Step 2 – Internalize

Leaders discuss, practice, and connect skills to their own workplace situations.

Step 3 – Apply

After returning to the workplace, leaders use personal action plans to apply their new skills to solve workplace challenges.

Step 4 – Follow-up

Follow-up tools hold leaders accountable for applying their action plans back on the job.

Step 5 – Repeat

The process is repeated every two to four weeks until all core leadership skills are developed.

Three Problems with Most Leadership Training Programs

1. Managers Aren’t Held Accountable for Applying New Skills

The problem with many leadership development programs is that when a participant leaves the training event, they never revisit the material. They never apply what they were taught!

That won’t happen with The Leadership Journey:

  • Using our proprietary burst learning model, managers and supervisors learn practical how-to skills.
  • Then, using personal action plans, they apply these skills on the job to solve real workplace challenges.
  • Follow-up tools hold them accountable for applying their new skills.

2. Managers Are Overwhelmed with Information

Have you tried sending your leaders to seminars, workshops, or classes at the community college? Was the behavior change permanent? Did it “stick”?

Here’s the problem with a lot of leadership training:

  • They are way too long, flooding supervisors with information.
  • Few help leaders apply what they learn and hold them accountable for doing so.
  • Many programs are motivational rather than educational.

With The Leadership Journey, bite-sized courses get “right to the point” so participants are not overwhelmed with information and return to work quickly. You choose how long you want courses to last, from 15 to 90 minutes.

3. Managers Learn Theory Instead of Practical Skills

The Leadership Journey participants learn useful skills that can be immediately applied in the workplace. Courses are to the point, taught in a step-by-step manner, and based on real-life situations rather than theory.

Managers will learn practical skills like:

  • A simple five-step method for giving clear directions.
  • How to use powerful words to unlock listening potential.
  • A six-step accountability model.
  • Three ways to respond to and help troubled employees.
  • How to give constructive feedback in a way that boosts morale.
